about

Milwaukee-based 1980s punk pop band the Sidewalks might have been relegated to the dust bin of rock ’n’ roll history if it weren’t for the efforts of one fan -- Chuck Warner, owner of Boston’s Hyped2Death label. Warner came across a copy of the band’s rare 1981 single Natalie at a 2003 record show. Smitten by the infectious tune, he tracked down lead singer Dan Kwas to ask if he could put the song on one of his Teenline compilations of 80s power pop.
Kwas had formed the Sidewalks in the summer of 1979 with brothers John and Mike Bartlein. For the next three and a half years, the band performed its own brand of 1960s garage band rock and 1980s punk pop at clubs in Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago. The band released its single Natalie b/w Whoever Said That You Was Cool in the summer of 1981. Natalie was well received on local college radio, becoming the No. 1 requested song on Milwaukee’s WMSE in August of that year. Another song, Rhythm Kids, a sly poke at the Catholic method of birth control, was included on a compilation album from Milwaukee rock radio station WKTI in December 1982.
When contacted by Warner in 2003, Kwas not only agreed to let him use Natalie, he sent Warner copies of other songs the band had recorded during the period. Warner released those on a CD in 2004 titled Rhythm Kids. Italian label Rave Up Records heard the CD and released a limited edition 12-inch vinyl version in 2007, which quickly sold out. The CD and album sparked renewed interest in the Sidewalks and the band is now enjoying a new appreciation from fans young and old across the globe.
Here Are The Sidewalks brings together newly digitally remastered versions of Natalie and Rhythm Kids along with eight other original songs recorded in the studio between 1980 and 1982.
It is the first time the songs are available as digital downloads.
